When did Archery start?
Archery is the technique of using a bow and arrow. It is one of the oldest sports that is still practiced to this day! It can be dated back to around 20,000 BC. It was originally used in combat and even before that, hunting. In modern times though, it is seen as a sport and recreational activity, as its use in wars became obsolete when gunpowder was discovered.
The sport made its way to Britain around 2690 BC. Bow and arrows were the weapon that contributed to the Norman victory in the Battle of Hastings in 1066, which inspired the development of longbows.
Archery has also been featured in the Olympic games for over 100 years and became a permanent sport of the games in 1972 at the Munich Olympics. Archery is also a popular Paralympic sport since its introduction to the games in 1960.
Archery is not the only activity we have at Cluny Activities that you can see in the Olympics. Shooting and Golf, two of our most popular activities, are also featured in the upcoming Paris 2024 games.
